Exhibitions
Kath Egan works in sculpture, video and photography, creating contemporary artworks that recontextualise everyday materials and found objects. A collector of discarded domestic treasures, the shelves of Egan's studio are filled with objects and materials that remain static until they are given new life as stacked totems, assemblages and installations.
Her practice is an ongoing inquiry into the materiality of the domestic and the endurance of the sacred. Subtle interventions with familiar and nostalgic materials elevate women and home making, engaging narratives of motherhood, migration and connection to community.
The daughter of Croatian migrants, Egan draws on an inheritance of Catholic devotional forms, Slavic folklore and domestic craft received in fragments across generations. Connection deepened through return trips to Croatia as an adult, Egan gathers culture and language firsthand. Her practice mirrors this diaspora experience of identity, like assemblage, constructed from found pieces rather than inherited whole.
A graduate of Byron School of Art with a background in fashion, costume and textile design, Egan has been a finalist in the Blake Prize, Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, Wollumbin Art Prize (twice) and the Byron Arts Magazine Art Prize, where she was Highly Commended and won the People's Choice Award. Exhibitions include solo show Time Peace Alter at Tweed Regional Gallery and We were made for these times, a joint exhibition with Melbourne-based artist Kate Rohde at Lismore Regional Gallery. Her video work Objects of Devotion recently screened at the Regent Cinema as part of the ANR Sector Gathering / LAVA Festival. Upcoming solo exhibition at BSA Project Space Devotional Aesthetics opens in October 2026.
In 2025 Egan founded Studio Sirona, her purpose built artist studio hosting the Mezzanine Studio Visiting Artist Program. She lives in the Northern Rivers region of NSW with her husband and two children.
